Apple Seeds Xcode 4 Preview 5 To Developers
November 13, 2010 at 8:27 AM

A few minutes ago Apple released the fifth developer preview of Xcode 4 to developers. It’s available in the Mac and iOS Dev Center. The release comes a month after the fourth developer preview.

This is a pre-release version of Xcode 4, a major new release of Xcode for both Mac and iOS development. This release requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and includes the iOS SDK 4.2 GM seed, to develop apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

OmniFocus for iPad Updated for iOS 4.2 Multitasking
November 13, 2010 at 7:44 AM

OmniFocus, my GTD app of choice on OS X and iOS, is now compatible with multitasking on the iPad. Although iOS 4.2 isn’t officially out and it looks like it won’t be at least until sometime next week, users running the latest iOS 4.2 GM can enjoy fast app switching, background sync and local notifications in OmniFocus for iPad.

The latest 1.2 update, released a few minutes ago in iTunes, adds a bunch of new features and lots of improvements, too. The changelog is really huge, so I suggest you go check it out below. Notable new features include the possibility to receive local notifications without the need of a sync server, seven new languages, a revamped editing panel and more geolocation functionalities.

Seriously, great update. The one users already on iOS 4.2 have been waiting for. Go get it. Then read why we love OmniFocus. Read More

From Apple's Newton to Evernote

From Apple’s Newton to Evernote

The company was founded by Stepan Pachikov, who was kind of this brilliant mad scientist from Russia. He and his team were behind a lot of the pioneering work that went into the Apple Newton, fifteen years ago. The handwriting recognition engine was built by these guys. They had a company called ParaGraph, which Apple licensed.
So the original idea really started in the Newton days.

Evernote for iOS also got a nice update today with iOS 4.2 support, audio note improvements and printing.

Hide and Disable Ping in iTunes 10.1
November 13, 2010 at 4:43 AM

iTunes 10.1, launched a few hours ago, introduced two new options to hide Ping from the sidebar and disable it completely using parental controls. First, check out our previous post detailing how you can hide Ping’s dropdown menu using a Terminal hack.

If you want to hide the Ping element from iTunes’ sidebar, open iTunes’ preferences, hit the General tab and deselect Ping in the “Show” section. That will remove it from the sidebar.

Microsoft Targets Mac's Lack Of Blu-Ray Support In Latest Windows 7 Ad
November 13, 2010 at 4:21 AM

I haven’t really ever felt like needing to watch a Blu-Ray movie on my MacBook Pro, but apparently the folks down at Redmond think it’s worth producing an focused on it. In order to promote entertainment on Windows 7 machines versus Mac machines through the support of Blu-Ray disks, the video we’re referring to shows a Mac and a PC on flight, watching Avatar on the PC’s screen.

It’s nice and well-realized, overall. Check it out below. Read More

MacStories Weekly Game: Robokill
November 13, 2010 at 3:52 AM

This week’s featured game is the latest effort by Wandake, Robokill. See, Robokill on the surface may look a lot like other games available in the App Store such as Minigore or Age of Zombies. You control this robot, with a bird’s eye view, and you have to face enemies coming from all sides of the screen. Unlike Minigore, though, Robokill provides a greater attention to details in level design and enemy attack patterns.

For instance, Robokill’s droids are smart, while Minigore’s monsters just care about running against you. Enemies in Robokill shoot, cover, attack, back up. That’s not bad a simple action game for iPad. Plus, once you clear levels in the game your character will evolve and become able to equip new weapons and shields. With more than 450 levels and 13 missions, that’s quite an inventory to build. You can also collect cash and hidden loot to purchase upgrades through a virtual store — which is always welcome. I like this RPG-like side of Robokill, something the aforementioned similar games surely don’t provide. Not like in Robokill. Read More

Tweet Library 1.1 Brings iOS 4.2 Support, More Filters, Lots Of Fixes
November 13, 2010 at 3:10 AM

Tweet Library is an excellent app by Riverfold Software which allows you to “curate tweets”. You can create collection of tweets and publish them online, keep an offline cache of your tweets and favorites, filter your timeline and sort tweets by date. It’s a great companion to your default Twitter client. From my review:

Tweet Library is an app meant for letting you archive, collect and filter tweets. It's great for conference tweeting, it's a good tool for blogger when a new iOS beta comes out and they need to group tweets about new features, it's a great app for users wondering "what happened to that tweet?". Tweet Library is a searchable local archive of your Twitter activity.

The new 1.1 update brings full support for iOS 4.2, meaning multitasking and persistent state. It works perfectly. The app now also contains a bunch of additional filters for pictures shared on flic.kr, instagr.am, and plixi.com. The developer also introduced lots of performance improvements and fixes.

Tweet Library is available at $9.99. If you use Twitter on a daily basis and you care about keeping a personal record of your tweets, it’s well worth it. Check out the full changelog below. Read More

Using Simplenote On Classic Mac OS
November 13, 2010 at 12:51 AM

Using Simplenote On Classic Mac OS

First and foremost: as you may have guessed, there isn't a 'Simplenote client' for Mac OS 9 or earlier versions, so your best option on a vintage Mac is to access your Simplenote account and your notes using the Web interface. On Mac OS 9, this is accomplished rather effortlessly using Classilla and enabling JavaScript for the Simplenote website. Classilla correctly renders the modern, iPad-flavoured Simplenote interface, and you can also use the old one if you so prefer.

It also works on Mac OS 8.6. Completely useless, but we love it.

Artist Pays Homage To Apple By Destroying Its Products

Artist Pays Homage To Apple By Destroying Its Products

Artist Michael Tompert takes Apple's products and wrecks them with blowtorches, sledgehammers, handsaws and handguns. His large-scale prints of the detritus are surprisingly colorful and beautiful.

"It's an alternate viewpoint," explained Tompert at a preview of his first gallery show, which opens in San Francisco today. They're beautiful inside. They're beautiful when you open them up.

Tearing products apart is now a form of “art”.

Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Coming To The Mac
November 12, 2010 at 11:48 PM

GTA, one of the most popular “mature” videogame series which sold million of copies on consoles and handhelds, is coming to the Mac. And it’s coming with a trilogy, a package containing GTA III (the first 3D episode of the series), GTA Vice City and the acclaimed GTA: San Andreas, my favorite GTA episode so far. The games originally came out on Sony’s PlayStation 2.

The Grand Theft Auto series has been one of the most highly demanded titles by the Mac community. The availability of this incredible franchise on the Mac underscores TransGaming's role in transforming the overall Mac gaming market," commented Vikas Gupta, President & CEO of TransGaming, in the press release. "These games will be widely available and will be a great catalyst to the increasing popularity of gaming on the Mac.

GTA Trilogy for Mac will be released on November 22nd. You can preorder it now on Amazon. Can’t wait.

Hidden, A Simplenote Client That Keeps Your Notes Private – 10 Codes Up for Grabs
November 12, 2010 at 11:29 PM

Simplenote is a neat web service that comes with native iPhone and iPad apps (and a couple of widgets for the Mac, too) which enables you to store your notes in the cloud. I’m a huge fan of Simplenote, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most popular apps available in the App Store.

Hidden is a new iPhone app by Coding Robots (I’m hearing the developers are also working on a Simplenote-based task management app) that can access your standard Simplenote notes, but also allows you to keep private notes no one but you can read. Read More

AirPlay Disappears From iOS 4.2 GM on iPhone 3G
November 12, 2010 at 10:31 PM

As noted by 9to5mac last night, AirPlay went missing on the iOS 4.2 GM for iPhone 3G. The feature was there in the previous betas and was working fine, allowing users to stream audio (no video to Apple TV yet, it needs an update) to AirPlay-compatible devices.

Apple apparently removed the feature when releasing the GM build on November 1st:

After speaking to multiple developers and users testing out the iOS 4.2 betas, we have determined that AirPlay did in fact work on the iPhone 3G at one point, meaning the AirPlay functionality was definitely removed from Apple's two-year-old iPhone at its GM stage. The reason this is an issue is because Apple states, even on their own website, that AirPlay is supported on ALL iOS 4 devices.

Activate AirPrint On OS X 10.6.5 With One Click
November 12, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Even though it is believed that people nowadays don’t print much (I surely don’t), Apple’s removal of support for AirPrint shared printing on the latest version of OS X, 10.6.5, raised a few eyebrows. They had announced the feature, but they didn’t deliver with 10.6.5 — even if previous developer version of the OS update had AirPrint enabled.

It seems like it was too unstable to make it to the final version, but some are suggesting the folks at Cupertino are dealing with patent trolling issues for shared printers in AirPrint. We don’t know. Read More

Hacker Runs Microsoft's Kinect on OS X
November 12, 2010 at 9:37 PM

A few days after Microsoft released Kinect (and years later Apple’s interest in the device), a motion-based game controller for the Xbox 360 console, a group of hackers managed to modify the device’s settings, hack it and let it run on Windows 7.

Microsoft of course isn’t interested in this kind of hacks and will never support such efforts — also because there’s not really much you can do with Kinect on computers. It “runs” and  displays the images it captures from the camera, but you can’t do much after all. Read More

New Gorillaz Album Recorded On An iPad
November 12, 2010 at 9:20 PM

Damon Albarn, Blur’s singer and frontman of Gorillaz, announced the follow-up to Plastic Beach (3rd studio album of Gorillaz) has been recorded entirely on an iPad. He’s aiming at a holiday season release. In an interview with UK music magazine NME, he said:

I’ve made it on an iPad – I hope I’ll be making the first record on an iPad. I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record.

I wonder how many music apps were necessary to get the album recording done on the tablet. Perhaps they needed to deploy their own app? We look forward to whatever Mr. Albarn has in store.
